South Granville High student, who was daughter of a school resource officer, killed in car crash
CREEDMOORE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A student at South Granville High School died in a car crash Monday morning, according to Granville County Public Schools.
In a statement, the city of Creedmoor identified the victim as Emma Wallace, whose father, Corp. Tony Wallace, serves as Creedmoor School Resource Officer.
Emma played softball and volleyball for South Granville High, where her athleticism shined.
"Emma came on, and she tried out; she really showed a lot of potential. She had a really strong hit. And I feel like instantly her and some of the girls connected really well," said Jordan Rhodes, who was Emma's club volleyball coach last season.
Rhodes said her talent was evident from the beginning, as was her ability to connect with teammates.
"She could always make everyone laugh. She made me laugh so much. She made her other teammates laugh so much. I just want everyone, when they think about her, to just think of all the good memories that we shared with her and how much of an impact she really had on our team last year, because she had a really big one," said Rhodes.
That positivity was felt at both matches and practices.
"She was a really good player. She was so fun to be around. At practice, I remember one time she brought a little personal microphone and put it on, and we recorded the whole practice. It was super fun. Good way for the girls to get to know each other a little bit more, interact with each other. She was really fun. She definitely brightened up the practice a lot," said Rhodes.
In a statement, Creedmoor Police Chief wrote: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wallace family, Emma's friends and teammates, and everyone in our community who is grieving this devastating loss. We are thankful for all the support that we have received from our community."
Monday's crash happened around 7:45 a.m., when an eyewitness tells ABC11 that Emma was driving southbound on US 15 when her car collided with a vehicle traveling northbound. The driver of the other vehicle remained on scene, though that driver's name and condition have not been released.
In a statement, a school district spokesperson wrote:
"Today, Granville County Public Schools is mourning the loss of one of its South Granville High School students. She was a teammate to many and a vibrant member of our school. Her loss is felt by every member of our school community. Our hearts are broken."
"The district as a whole and the staff and students of South Granville High School are grateful for the outpouring of support from the entire Granville County community. We appreciate the community partners who helped care for our students and staff today. Our district will continue to provide support services as we all grieve."
"Thank you all for sending love and prayers to the family and to the South Granville High School community. This tremendous loss will be felt deeply by so many," said Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborne
